Calvary Chapel began in the late 1960’s as a small non-denominational church of 25 members pastored by Chuck Smith in Costa Mesa, CA. As we round the turn of the century, Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa is home to some 30,000 believers, The Word for Today publishes Bible study books and tapes all over the world, KWVE broadcasts God’s Word to all of Southern California, CSN broadcasts God’s Word all over the world, and Calvary Chapel’s Bible College provides Bible education to thousands at its home campus in Murietta, California and at over 20 extension campuses world wide.  Click here for a gripping account of the history and spread of Calvary Chapel.

Calvary Chapel on the Lakeshore began as an area outreach home fellowship of Calvary Chapel East Grand Rapids (now just called “Calvary Chapel Grand Rapids”).  Mike Macon had been teaching the Monday night Bible study at Calvary Chapel East Grand Rapids, as well as the teens on Sunday mornings. At that time, some families were commuting in from Muskegon to Grand Rapids on Sunday mornings in order to fellowship around the Word of God with like-minded believers. After praying about it, it was agreed that Mike would come up on Wednesday evenings and lead a home fellowship in the Muskegon area. Initially, the fellowship alternated between several homes.

Later, God opened the door for Mike and his wife Meaghan to move up to Norton Shores from Grand Rapids; this enabled the fellowship to meet in one location (Mike’s living room).  The Lord continued to bless, and we experienced the call of God to start meeting on Sundays, starting in the Book of Psalms, and to seek affiliation with Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa as a new church on Michigan’s glorious west coast.  Today we have people driving in from the greater Muskegon and Grand Haven areas and beyond to fellowship with us on Sunday mornings, from Twin Lake, Spring Lake, Ravenna, and even as far away as Holland!

A summary of our doctrinal beliefs can be found here.
